This Morning fans were left baffled on Tuesday as a guest, appearing live from Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, claimed that a groundhog named Phil, who makes the Groundhog Day prediction, was 135 years old.
Punxsutawney Phil will come out of his burrow and predict whether there will be six more weeks of winter or an early spring.
Taking to Twitter, one This Morning fan said: “They’re all insane aren’t they? A 135-year-old groundhog? I bet it’s a bit like Trigger’s brush – 17 new heads and 13 new handles.”
Another wrote: “135 years old? You blew it, mate… you’ve turned it into a joke now! Get in the bin!”
A third tweeted: “I’m pretty sure that groundhog isn’t 135 years old! According to Wikipedia they live 14 years in captivity.”
Someone else said: “Elixir and the groundhog is 135, yeah right of course he is.”
A fifth commented: “B******* that thing is 135,” adding a laughing emoji.
While another viewer was confused, writing: “135 years old? What?”
Given the apparently miraculous elixir, presenter Phil asked the guest if he’d ever been tempted to have a swig to prolong his life.
The guest explained: “We give him an elixir in the summer every year, a special potion, and it gives him seven more years of life.
“He’s 135. He might be older than that – that’s when he came to us, so we’re not really sure.”
He went on: “Actually, it has the reverse effect on humans. I’m actually 15 years old, because I took it, now look.”
Pointing to himself – and clearly not 15 years old – he said: “This is what happened, so you’ve got to be careful.
“I didn’t know – I was a young guy!”
